Scout is only 7 or 8 but has a badly bowed front leg, making riding impossible. But Scout is available to have attention and love lavished upon him, soft pets, and apples or carrots fed to him . . . He would make a great candidate for equine assisted therapy or even someone who just wants a 4 legged companion to love. Please consider giving Scout a home and contact Melanie Sheade at 310 696-9328 or by email at msheade@gmail.com.

Pirate and Dakota are both in their 20s and have left their riding days behind them. But they’re awfully nice to look at and would make a great organic lawnmower, companions for a single horse, sheep or goat, or just really great back yard pets. If you woud like to know more about either Dakota or Pirate, please contact Melanie Sheade at 310 696-9328 or by email at msheade@gmail.com.

Colton is a cute little guy that was probably an incredible endurance horse in his day. Now he has some slight neurological problems that cause his back legs to not always cooperate, making him unsafe for riding. Endurance horses have huge hearts and no doubt this guy served someone faithfully for years in these endurance competitions. Please give him the retirement and care he deserves for his golden years. For more information about Colton, contact Melanie Sheade at 310 696-9328 or msheade@gmail.com.

DeeDee is a QH around 25 that was used for reining and most recently a therapeutic riding horse for handicapped children. Bailey is a 29 yr old Appendix QH mare that has been a therapeutic riding horse for kids for the last 6 years. The riding program is down sizing and these 2 mares have until Oct 28th to find a home. They are both such sweet mares, nickering when you walk by. After all they done for the children, these girls deserve a peaceful, loving retirement where they can just relax and get lavished with love and affection. Contact us if you are interested in DeeDee or Bailey.

8/28/09 Update: Found a home!
This mare has been used as a lesson horse for years, faithfully carrying new riders on her back to give them the thrill of riding a horse. Someone has decided that she is no longer of any value and, despite the loyal service she provided, she has been dumped at a feedlot where she awaits a horrible fate. She appears sound and healthy and would be a great addition to a riding program, or just a sweet backyard pet for the kids. She is small, only about 14.2 hands. Please consider giving her the home she deserves. Contact us at info@returntofreedom.org if you are interested in learning more about this mare.

8/28/09 Update: Found a home!
La Purisima Mission is not only a historic site, but is a favorite spot for hikers, bikers, people walking their dogs and horseback riders. The mission is also home to dozens of farm animals. Due to budget cuts, the Mission (like manyother state parks) could be closed. The local community is fighting to keep the mission open, but volunteers are working to line up homes for the animals in case the worst happens. Two of their special, retired horses need a home together where they can live out their days just resting their old bones. Grano is a 20 year old Arab who has a salivary gland problem (which responds to Bute) and an irregular heartbeat. He was recently retired from riding. Big Red is a 25 year old Quarter Horse who was retired from riding 4 years ago because of Arthritis. However, he gets around very well. Both horses enjoy being taken out for walks on a halter and love people. These two older gentlemen urgently need a retirement home for their senior years. If you can help, please contact Return to Freedom at 805 737-9246 or by email at info@returntofreedom.org.

8/28/09 Update: Thie beautiful filly found a forever home at the Horses of Tir Na Nog Sanctuary in San Diego. She is recovering under the loving care of sanctuary staff and volunteers and is doing very well. Looks like a happy ending for her!
This pretty grey mare once belonged to someone. We don’t know who, or what her life was like. We only know that when they decided they had no use for her they drove her out to the desert and dumped her. But not before brutally cutting their brand out of her hide so that she could not be traced to them. This poor, terrified girl was found wandering in the desert without food or water, and traumatized by the horrific act of cruelty she experienced. The Dept of Agriculture found her, and brought her to a livestock yard. If we cannot find her a home, she will certainly get scooped up by the slaughter industry’s kill buyers, which means her nightmare would only be beginning. Please open your hearts to this mare. She looks young and healthy (other than her wound where she was cut), but we don’t know much else about her. Understandably she is very frightened of people right now so a sanctuary environment or an experienced horse person would be best. She will need time to heal and learn to trust again. If you can give this mare the loving home she deserves please contact Return to Freedom right away at 805 737-9246 or by email at info@returntofreedom.org.

Grey is a 17 yr old QH that was rescued from the auction just over a year ago. He is a sweet boy that has good ground manners, but is now blind in one eye making him unsuitable for riding. He needs to be retired as a pasture pet or companion horse. He could possibly be led around with children, but some cystic changes may be early signs of navicular. If you have a big heart and would like to let this guy live out his days in retirement, please contact colleenm@springmail.com.
